You can happily let your children choose these according to their current passions, which at certain ages can change as quickly as their shoe size.

Choose practical and durable furniture and furnishings and your child’s room will last through the ages.

How did it go?

Q I have finished the room but my daughter is a light sleeper and even if I draw the curtains they let in too much light during her afternoon sleep. They co-ordinate with the rest of the fabrics in the room so I don’t want to replace them. What other option do I have?

A You have a couple of choices depending on how you have hung the curtains and what type of window you have. If there’s a recess, then have a roller blind made in black-out fabric and fit this to the frame. Alternatively, pick out a dark colour from the pattern and buy another pair of curtains to match this and hang them from a supplementary pole.

Q I indulged my son’s choice for Super Heroes wallpaper but he’s now into football and wants a change. Any ideas?

A Buy some of those little football stickers and position them randomly among the heroes. Then explain that even Super Heroes need play time and tell him he can change the room when he’s ready to redecorate it himself.

Here’s an idea for you

Fabric drawstring bags provide practical storage for everything from clothes to toys. They make a versatile option and bought in different colours and designs are one way of adding colour and fun to the room. The quickest and easiest way to add lots of extra storage space is to put up a peg rail around the room from which you hang any number of bags. Make sure that when you put it up, you drill good deep holes and use rawl plugs for extra strength. You have to figure that at some point children will pull on bags and put the rail under considerable pressure.

Defining ideas

‘What might be taken for a precocious genius is the genius of childhood’

PABLO PICASSO

‘All the time a person is a child he is both a child and learning to be a parent. After he becomes a parent he becomes predominantly a parent reliving childhood.’

Dr BENJAMIN SPOCK
